I decided to start this blog because I have an obsession with food. I’m serious, food is literally one of the main things I think about all day. I love to taste it, touch it, smell it, and photograph it. I believe my obsession started as a teenager, after my parent’s divorce. Having been raised by a single mom, my brother and I spent hours at home while our mother was working: this left us with needs to entertain ourselves. Since my brother and I were not allowed to play outside, while our mom wasn’t at home, our two prominent forms of entertainment were watching television and cooking. We both loved to experiment in the kitchen.
Moving to college helped blossom my passion for food and cooking. During my Junior year, I lived with my roommate, Nicky, who introduced me to amazing tips such as cooking with butter, good quality chocolate, and Huckleberries. That year, I bought my first cookbook; The Joy of Cooking. My Senior year, I lived with Anna, who led me to discover International cuisine. Anna also bought me my second cookbook.
Today, I still love to cook but my thoughts around food have changed dramatically. Living in Portland Oregon I have access to a variety of fresh, local food from a variety of markets. In the summer I purchase practically all my produce from these markets. This last summer (2010) I even participated in a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program for the first time. I love supporting my local farms not only because I know where my food is coming from but also because it insures my money goes back to the community.
Hope you enjoy reading my blog as I experiment with cooking and baking.
Cheers
